Rapper Pimp C, one half of legendary Texas duo UGK, was found dead Tuesday morning (December 4) in his room at the Mondrian Hotel on Los Angeles' Sunset Strip.
Police responded to a 911 call, and found the rapper (real name: Chad Butler) dead in his bed.
The rapper was just 33 years old.
"We mourn the unexpected loss of Chad," Jive Records' President Barry Weiss said in a statement. "He was truly a thoughtful and kind-hearted person. He will be remembered for his talent and profound influence as a pioneer in bringing southern rap to the forefront. He will be missed and our prayers remain with his family and Bun B. I've known Chad since he was 18, and we loved him dearly and he was a cherished member of the Jive family."
At press time, details and/or the cause of death are unknown.
Pimp C was in Los Angeles for a performance with labelmate Too Short.
UGK, which also includes rapper Bun B, was put on hold in 2002 when Pimp C was sentenced to eight years in prison on an assault charge. He was released in December of 2005 and went straight to work.
He dropped the solo album, Pimpalation, in 2006, then in August, he and Bun B released Underground Kingz, the duo's first studio album in five years.
